How to:
read your analytics: which numbers actually matter

It's easy to judge your progress by follower count and likes, because they're the numbers staring at you every time you open the app. The problem is they're the least useful ones. A big following that never engages does nothing for you, and a viral like-count rarely turns into streams, tickets or fans. These are vanity metrics — they feel like progress without telling you whether anything's actually working.

The numbers worth watching are the ones that show real interest. Saves and shares matter far more than likes, because they mean someone valued your post enough to keep it or pass it on. Reach and views from non-followers tell you whether you're growing beyond the people you already have. On reels, watch retention — how far through people actually watch — because that's what the algorithm rewards. And profile visits plus link clicks show intent: people moving from "saw your post" toward "checked you out." For your newsletter, open and click rates beat subscriber count every time.

Past the platform stats, track what actually converts. Did a post translate into streams, pre-saves, ticket sales or email signups? That's the metric that pays your bills, and it's the one most people never look at. You don't need to obsess over a dashboard — pick a handful of meaningful numbers, check them regularly, and let them tell you what's resonating so you can do more of it. Chasing engagement that converts will always beat chasing a follower count that doesn't.

THE CHECK LIST

  • Stop judging progress by follower count and likes alone

  • Track saves and shares — they signal real value better than likes

  • Watch reach and views from non-followers to see if you're growing past your bubble

  • Check retention on your reels — how far through people actually watch

  • Look at profile visits and link clicks as signs of genuine intent

  • For your newsletter, prioritise open and click rates over subscriber count

  • Tie it back to what converts: streams, pre-saves, tickets and signups
