How to:
collaborate with other promoters instead of competing
It's easy to look at other promoters as the competition. Same city, same crowd, chasing the same faces on the same Friday nights. But in a grassroots scene, treating everyone else as a rival is a trap. The pie isn't fixed. The promoter down the road isn't stealing your crowd — between you, you're building the scene that keeps all of your nights alive. When the local scene is thriving, more people come out full stop, and that lifts everyone.
Collaboration is more practical than it sounds, too. It can be co-hosting a night and splitting the cost and risk so you can do something more ambitious than either of you could alone. It can be sharing lineups and swapping DJs, or cross-promoting each other's events to your respective crowds so you both double your reach. It can be as simple as coordinating dates so you're not going head-to-head on the same weekend and splitting the same forty people between two half-empty rooms. Even just talking to each other about venues, suppliers and what's worked is a form of working together.
Treating every other promoter as the enemy is a lot of effort for very little back. Building actual relationships gets you introductions, favours and access to crowds you couldn't reach on your own. So start small and start genuine. Reach out to promoters whose nights you actually respect and whose crowd overlaps or complements yours, and offer something before you ask for anything — share their event, bring your people to their night. Keep your own identity intact, because collaborating isn't merging. But treat the others in your scene as allies, not enemies. The real competition was never the promoter down the road. It's empty rooms and people staying home.
