HOW TO:
PICK THE RIGHT VENUE FOR YOUR CROWD AND CAPACITY
Most promoters fall in love with a venue before they've worked out whether it fits the night they can actually pull. A room that's too big is the most common mistake going — 80 people in a 400-capacity space feels dead, no matter how good the music is, while those same 80 in a 120 room feels rammed and alive. Energy comes from a room that's working at capacity, so be honest about the numbers you can realistically bring before you fall for a name.
Start with your crowd, not the building. Who actually comes to your nights, where do they already drink and dance, and what part of town will they travel to? The venue has to make sense for them — the right area, the right price point, a sound system and layout that suit your music. A pristine bar with a polite PA is wrong for a heavy underground night, and a dark basement is wrong for an early, social warm-up crowd. Match the room's character to the night you're selling, not just its capacity.
Then do the boring checks that decide whether it's viable: realistic capacity against your honest projected numbers, the sound system, the layout and flow, the area and its transport links, the licence and curfew, and what it all costs once the hidden extras are in. The goal is a room that feels full and sounds right at the numbers you can genuinely hit. Get that match right and the venue does half your marketing for you — get it wrong and even a sold-out lineup feels like a quiet night.
THE CHECK LIST
Be honest about how many people you can realistically pull before you look at rooms
Pick a capacity your real numbers can fill — a packed small room beats a half-empty big one
Start with your crowd: where they already go, what area they'll travel to, what they'll pay
Check the sound system and layout actually suit your music and the night's energy
Visit on a night similar to yours to see how the room really feels when it's busy
Confirm the licence, curfew and transport links work for your crowd
Run the full costs against your projected door before you commit to anything
