WHY:
MUSIC MASTERING MATTERS FOR ALL PRODUCERS TO KNOW
Plenty of producers treat mastering as something only signed artists with budgets bother with. It isn't. Mastering is the final stage that takes a finished mix and turns it into a release — one that holds its own next to professional tracks, on a club rig, a phone speaker, a car stereo or a pair of cheap earbuds. Skip it, and your track will sound noticeably quieter and flatter than everything around it, no matter how good the production is.
It matters most in the places your music actually gets heard. A label A&R skimming demos hears the unmastered one drop in volume and energy and moves on. Stream it next to a properly mastered track and the difference is obvious before the first drop. Across an EP, mastering is also what makes the whole thing feel like one body of work rather than five tracks bounced on different days. It's the glue and the polish at once.
One thing to be clear on: mastering can't rescue a bad mix. It's a finishing process, not a fix — if your low end is muddy or your levels are fighting, sort that first. Once the mix is solid, you've got options: hire a mastering engineer, use an online service like LANDR or eMastered, or learn to do it yourself with good references. Whichever route you take, the goal is the same — a track that translates everywhere and sounds finished, not "nearly there."
Don’t be producers who do this in Kato’s meme!
THE CHECK LIST
Get the mix right first — mastering polishes a good mix, it doesn't fix a bad one
Bounce your mix with headroom, leaving around -6dB on the master and no limiter
Reference your track against released tracks in the same genre and at the same loudness
Decide your route: a mastering engineer, an online service, or doing it yourself
Check the master translates across a club system, phone, car and cheap earbuds
Master every track in a release together so the EP sounds consistent
Keep an unmastered version archived in case you need to come back to it
