How to:
stand out (and make it easy for bookers) with the right photos

Your photos do a job most artists never think about until a promoter asks for one and the only thing you’ve got is a dark, blurry shot of you looking down at the decks or equipment. Those moody booth photos absolutely have a purpose — they live well on social media and they capture a vibe.

But if that’s all you have, a promoter or booker can’t do much with it. They need something they can actually build artwork around, and press needs something that meets their standard, so the photos you have decide what other people can do with you.

Think about where the images end up. A promoter putting your name on a flyer needs a clear shot of your face — you looking up, in focus, with enough quality and space around you to drop into a design. A music blog or press outlet won’t touch anything that isn’t high-res, clear and editorial, because it has to sit next to everyone else’s on their platform.

A blurry phone clip won’t cut it, no matter how good the moment was. Promoters and blogs work with what you give them. Give them a blurry booth shot and you’ve made yourself easy to pass over or it’s guaranteed that they’ll be chasing you for better photos because you’re holding up their process. Here’s the reassuring part: this doesn’t mean an expensive shoot you can’t afford yet. A clear, well-lit shot of you against a plain wall, taken on an iPhone in good light, is genuinely fine to start with — clear and usable beats fancy and blurry every time.

The goal is simply to have something sharp, bright and editorial that a promoter or a blog can actually use. Build up from there as you can, and when you’re ready to invest, a proper shoot gives you a set of images that works across press, socials, your EPK and event artwork for months.

THE CHECK LIST

  • Keep the moody booth shots for social, but don’t rely on them for bookings

  • Get at least one clear shot of you looking up and in focus

  • Make sure you have a high-res, editorial image press and blogs can actually use

  • Leave space around you in the frame so promoters can build artwork from it

  • No budget yet? A sharp iPhone shot against a plain wall in good light is fine

  • Prioritise clear and usable over fancy and blurry, every time

  • Invest in a proper shoot when you can, for images that work everywhere
