How to:
write an effective artist bio
Most artist bios read like a CV nobody asked for — a list of gigs, a handful of name-drops, and a genre description that could apply to a hundred other people. A good bio isn't about impressing other artists. It's about giving promoters, bookers, and listeners a quick, clear reason to care.
The first sentence is everything. Lead with what makes you distinctive — your sound, your perspective, your trajectory — not where you're from or how long you've been doing it. Be specific. Vague language like "genre-blending" or "unique sound" tells the reader nothing. Name the scenes you're part of, the influences that shaped you, the moments that matter.
Write in third person, have 3 versions (one liner, short 150 words and long bio), and treat it as a live document. A bio that still leads with a residency you left two years ago is working against you.
Here’s an example of a bio for artist ‘X”
X is a London-based DJ and producer rooted in the intersection of UK garage and broken beat. Known for sets that move between dancefloor function and leftfield selection, she has held a residency at Fold and released on Local Action and Rhythm Section. Her productions draw on the grittier end of 90s UK club music without being beholden to it — forward-facing, but with a clear sense of where the sound comes from. Currently working on her debut EP.
THE CHECK LIST
Your first sentence earns attention without leading with where you're from or how long you've been doing it
You've named something specific — a sound, scene, release, or influence
— that sets you apart from a hundred similar bios
There are no filler phrases like "unique sound," "genre-defying,"
or "passionate about music"
You have all three versions ready: a one-liner, a short bio,
and a long bio for different contexts
It reflects where you are now, not where you were two years ago
